Our exciting summer 2008!We had an exciting summer with a trip down south to visit my family and a couple of days in Cardiff with a plan for some family history research. We knew very little of my mother’s father, Stephen Hubert Morris: only that he lived in Wales, lost a leg in WW1 and died in May 1922, 4 months after Mummy was born. We only had two photos of him and some letters that he wrote to my grandmother between 1918 and 1922. We had recently found some information on ancestry.co.uk – a record of the family living in Maerdy, Wales in 1901 and what we hoped was my great grandparents’ wedding in Cardiff in 1900 (3 years after Hubert’s birth). He had a younger brother Alfred, born 1899, but a story about a father and son killed in a pit accident made us think that may have been the end of the family line.We got my great grandparents’ marriage certificate from the Cardiff registry office then drove up to Maerdy and started talking to people in the street. We found the location of the 1901 house in Wrgant Place (since demolished) and my great grandparents’ grave in the cemetery. He died in 1925 in a pit accident but she lived until 1949 – which put her into living memory. Graves in Wales have addresses on them which gave absolute confirmation as it tied in with that on some of the letters (9 Richard Street). We then went to Richard Street to photograph the house and a very helpful lady, Linda Williams put us in touch with some of the older folk who remembered the family – including their two sons. We returned the next day and spoke to Rev Iris Thomas, who remembered a younger sister Iris and also said that Fred fought in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Then Linda did a bit more phoning round and came up with another name, Myra Walker. Here's a picture of Myra and me, looking at the family photographs. ![]() Myra turned out to be my mother’s first cousin, still living in Richard Street across the road from the original house. There has been no contact with this side of the fanily for over 70 years! She showed us many family photos and a copy of my grandfather’s War Diary and has put us in touch with numerous other cousins; the children of my grandfather’s 8 siblings. They live in Wales, Stourbridge, Oxford, Bath, France, Australia and the Isle of Man - and six more live in Fife & Kinross which is very near us. It has been so exciting – Ann, Sarah and I do not have any first cousins at all and only kept in touch (up to now) with two second cousins – so to find all these close relatives has been amazing. It’s just such a shame that Mummy died in 2002 and never knew she had all these cousins. She always wanted to find out more about her father but it took the internet and the ancestry website, plus a bit of sleuthing, to make it possible. If anyone wants to come and see our holiday photos of several hundred gravestones, let us know! Warning! Don't Rename Your User Page!A word of warning! Don't rename your user page!!
