My Knowledge Garden for FET8611

Summary of this page

This page is my introduction page for FET8611: Emerging Environments for Learning. It will include information about my work, my education and my study towards my Masters in Education Technology through USQ.

About me

I have been studying my Masters in Education Technology since 2007.This semester I hope to finish following my final two courses "FET5622: Creating Interactive Multimedia" and "FET8611: Emerging Environments for Learning."

For the last three years I have been employed as a secondary school business and IT teacher at Oakey State High School, near Toowoomba, Queensland. This year I am seconded to three Northern Toowoomba primary schools as their specialist IT teacher. I teach students in years Prep - 7 for approximately 45mins each week. I am working with both students and teachers integrating ICT into the curriculum.

One day per week I have a professional development role as a Darling Downs Smart Classroom Mentor where I work with Darling Downs teachers, face to face and online to gain their ICT certificate and Digital Pedagogy Licence. This semester I am also working as a facilitator for the Curriculum Integration Course, the online course for teachers to gain their Digital Pedagody Licence. So I have a feeling my computer will not be too far away from my side for the next 5 months.

I have really enjoyed improving my skills in publishing educational content to the web. The ability to create web pages using xhtml and php is something I make use of in my every day teaching. To cope with having large numbers of young students in a computer lab at the same time, without any assistance, I create xhtml webpages on our school intranet. This allows me to link content through visual clues, icons and hyperlinks, which simplifies locating files on our Education Queensland Managed Operating Environment. This encourages students to build on and improve their digital decoding skills thus enabling them to become independent learners at a young age.

Strategies for facilitation
  • I have created tables on my facilitated page with places participants can add their contributions.
  • I have posted into the discussion forums in the course to encourage participation
  • I have added links to the group home page
  • I have supported other participants with their technical problems as best I can in the hope that they may make contributions to my facilitated page
  • I have also added to the course discussions encouraging people to support each other by making contributions to the comments section if they feel a little intimidated to add content to the wiki.
  • I have read through many past participants contributions to KG and added a few thoughts. By doing this I have left my link on these pages to my facilitated page. Also by adding a link to pages with related content, those people who read that page will be able to follow the link for further study to my page.
  • I have sent a link to colleagues through emails so those interested in integrating video games may access and read the content.
Any problems?
  • Many participants have taken time to master the syntax of Tiki-wiki which I can see is difficult for those who have had little to do with any programming language. Thus their websites have been a little slow to emerge.
  • I can see that it can be tempting to add to your own site and not to others so I see this as an obstacle.
  • Also I have found that many times I go to a KG page and the page is being edited. That means that I have lost the opportunity. This may happen with others trying to add content to mine.
  • I have tried to add headings to my facilitated page so that I continue to get separate wikis which make editing a lot easier.
  • I would hope that participants don't see this wiki in the course as a competition to gain points or stars. Stars don't mean much to me. I just want others to be as passionate as I am about my facilitated page.
Anything else I believe is important
  • Tiki wiki coding problems
