 | I have a background in publishing, as a designer and many years ago was a secondary art teacher for nearly a decade. I originally enrolled in a PG Cert in Flexible Learning as part of what seems to be a constantly evolving process of reinventing myself after a long gap out of the workforce to have children. But I am enjoying studying so much that I recently transferred to a Master of Education Technology.
I have developed a strong interest in using wikis within education and have recently been a sessional facilitator in RMIT University’s Graduate School of Business where I have established and facilitated the development of wikis for students studying knowledge management. I have also started running workshops on effective use of wikis in education at lab.3000 |

Strategies
My intention is to develop the page using input from a variety of sources: personal experiences and ideas (mine and others), journal articles and industry magazines. I think the process of developing and managing the page will have similarities with designing a learning experience.
Attract and maintain interest in the page:
- I will attempt to make content as accessible as possible by:
- Thinking carefully about structuring (varying approaches and ways of requesting input) throughout the page to help maintain interest.
- Designing it to be at least easy to use and hopefully to have a distinctive look (maybe through the inclusion of a limited number of images) to help make it quickly identifiable. I think making pages visually distinctive is becoming more important as kG grows.
- Advertising: wider kG community through my UserPage and limited posts to the Shoutbox; to others in the 8611 group (particularly the workgroup) through Action Flash Workgroup Page, and linking to other pages wherever relevant.
- Feed the page:
- I want the page to develop with a deliberate strategy of unfolding. Input will be requested progressively (small/easy contributions first) in an attempt to increase contributions. I think people will find it easier to contribute small amounts frequently rather than ‘all in one hit’.
- Respond quickly to input from the community.
- Build community within the page: e.g. add your name if you are using or considering using a wiki. Will need to think about varying this as I have recently added a contacts list of people running wikis to Establishing your own wiki. Maybe use a guestbook that includes comments.
Problems
- I wonder if the content is too broad? As I read more about the use of wikis, I think about changing direction. I see it as a balance between being flexible to go in new directions and staying on track to make the page happen!
- I’ve noticed that I’ve done more work on Establishing your own wiki than I have on my facilitated page. There are overlaps, but that page seems to look at the more technical issues. I would prefer to concentrate more on the issues relating to application, but I see the two as closely linked. Deciding on what fits onto each page will be interesting. My idea at this stage is to make frequent use of links between the 2 pages.
- Boring title! Need to change it.
- Time. Balancing my time between demands of knowledgeGarden and WebCT will be a challenge.
