Second Life

Second Life (external link) is a 3D, free to access, world in which thousands of people live, work, learn and play everyday.

This page is a skeleton, and will feature the following sections:

    • How it works
    • Conferences recently held simultaneously online and in the real world
    • Video streaming and live music events
    • People making real money in a virtual world
    • Younger audiences catered to with Teen Second Life (external link)
    • How you can use it in teaching and learning environments

You can see an interesting video on a virtual campus in this YouTube video (external link)

Please feel free to contribute!

Considerations with Research in Second Life

If you are going to do a project or interview people in SL consider reading this article on

Contributions / Opinions / Ideas - The 13th Floor

I am excited by this new phase of virtual communities, for me it is a major shift in usage, an almost incredible idea and concept. I only logged in this morning for the first time and it is wonderful, It is not a game! - Hoor Ay

Comment Jo Foster This is the second time I have looked at second Life and I have signed on and able to get around the virtual world. It is so much fun and I think would be greeat to use as an educational tool. If there was a world for health care (which Yasmin has given me a link too) I think there would be lots of opportunity to extend experiential and/or situated learning by use of this type of tool.

I have been passionate about Virtual Reality for well over 10 years now but have not been able to get support for any developments via my work environment. I think it is the way for nursing to go to promote and enable full access to skills practice and reality patient care in different contexts. The changes to health care and access to real patients necessitates looking for alternative educational environments and this type would be a great starting point.

This would also link nicely with Jillian's Clinical Skills wiki.

News

15th October, 2006 - am thoroughly depressed at reading about SL in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald http://www.smh.com.au/news/TECHNOLOGY/QampA-With-Second-Life-Creator/2006/10/09/1160246030012.html. The 1980s group announced it is to re-launch itself with all original members – Simon Le Bon, John Taylor, Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor and Nick Rhodes – set to appear as "avatars" on a website called Second Life. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds35744.html (external link) - Roly

Users of Second Life in KG

Anyone interested in exploring Second Life for Educational or other reasons might like to add your names to explore the environment together. Exploring this environment with others might be interesting. Image having virtutal guides to show each other around. You can search to see if others are around and add them to your friends, just like in the garden, but in 3D. The live help has been excellent.

"Teaching in Games" report from Futurelab

Posted to SLED List by SL/Pathfinder Linden on Oct. 3, 2006

I thought this might be of interest:

From the FierceGameBiz Daily News on Gaming:

A one-year research project in the U.K. supported by EA and Futurelab
examining the role of computer games in education, called Teaching in Games,
suggests games augment motivation and strategic problem solving. The study
surveyed more than 2,300 students, 1,000 teachers and four schools. Ages in
the schools ranged from three to 18, with that majority of participants
between 11 and 18 years old. The three titles selected for use were "god
games," where the player has control over the entire game environment.

The report also suggested teachers don't need to be skilled game gurus in
order to successfully integrate the games into the curriculum. The majority
(72 percent) of teachers questioned never play computer games at home, but
36 percent of primary teachers and 27 percent of secondary teachers stated
they have used games in the classroom. Motivating the students is the
majority reason. While challenges like copy protection and technical support
remain, the future of education-aiding computer games looks promising.

Video on "Selling" SL to Adminstrators in Education

Posted to SLED List by SL/Mari Asturias on Oct. 3, 2006

I just viewed a 22 minute video produced by the Orange County
(California) Department of Education, Educational Technology group.
Titled " Games in Education" this video deals with the educational
impact of using educational video games in the classroom and features
interviews by Clark Aldrich, Dr. James Gee ( University of Wisconsin,
Madison) and Dr. Henry Jenkins (MIT). It also features comments by
Dave "Fargo" Kosak (GameSpy.com) and an interview by a high school
teacher who details his use of video games aligned with State
    Standards.

It does a good job of discussing both affordances and constraints and
has many fascinating ideas that might bear fruition in a SL
environment. Interestingly, at one point, as Dr. Jenkins is
speaking, a few SL video clips are shown!

    Science and Education Games

Welcome to the Science Center group! I can't wait to see more of what
    you're up to.

On Better World Island we host the Center for Water Studies (six
microhabitats on one small isle), Gardens of Hope (RL permaculture in
Lesotho, Africa) and the ManorMeta clean mining project now in development
along with caves and secret labs to explore. Our builds feature interactive
learning modules on sustainability, crystals and piezoelectricity, integral
theory and global crisis development. Most of our projects are linked
directly to nonprofits or educational groups and we welcome new Better World
Scouts and friends to come out for two weeks of events from 10/20 — 11/1.
The Harvest Festival on BWI includes attractions and games, speakers and
events, dancing and media, a great stop for educational tours and groups.

I can't wait to get back to Caledon, glad to know there's a Tesla society
there. Odd that our team's tesla specialist chose to use Caledonite
    extensively in the ManorMeta build.

Independent Film-Making Sets Stage Inside Computer Games Virtual Worlds: Machinima

Thanks all for your great contributions so far! I have just finished writing up this piece on Machinima (Ma-shi-ni-ma: think, machine + cinema) that might be of interest to Second Lifers looking to use SL (and other free and inexpensive software) to make high impact videos for training/education. This scene is really exploding online now, and there is a really rich diversity of content being produced both in and outside of education. You can read the full article, which contains a video showcase, by going to http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/10/10/independent_filmmaking_sets_stage_inside.htm (external link)

Hey Michael is the information on the "The Movies" in the article I posted the same as the one you metioned. What is this all about? It sounds lik ea game that you can create 3D movies in? - Andrew

Second Life Real Names - At a Price!

Someone asked whether it was possible to use your real name, or company name, in Second Life. There's good news and bad news (external link)

The article compares real names to domain names, I wonder if you could sell your identities? Could this be compared to selling your soul?
