Noting language gaps for later checking

Often, when students are learning English, they wonder, 'How would I say that in English?' Previously, students would be encouraged to write in a notebook and ask their teacher in the next class.
With mobile phones, this becomes much easier. Students use the voice recorder function and dictate the sentence or word they don't know. In the next class they can ask the teacher or other students to help. The teacher can then record the correct version in English onto the student's mobile phone for future reference.

Alternatively, the student can add the transcription and recording to an Excel spreadsheet as part of a glossary. To do this the student usually has to do the following:
  1. Pair the mobile phone to the computer using either Bluetooth or a cable. Nokia phones seem to be the most popular and Nokia has an excellent PC suite for doing this. Nokia PC Suite (external link). You download the soft ware and everything is done for you.
  2. Transfer the file to computer.

  1. Most mobile phones record in the .amr format. Not many codecs play this format. Once the file is on the computer it needs to be converted. Download Mobile Media coverter, a free conversion program to change the .amr to mp3 or wmv. Mobile Media Converter (external link)

Would you record yourself in this way? Are there other circumstances where you might need to take a recorded memo or note?

It is now possible to order translation packages for your telephone. These can be used in the classroom with translation dictionaries, therfore immediate translation maybe provided (providing the teacher is ok with it's utilization).
